Syllabus

This International A Level Law Course with Edexcel will help you develop a sound understanding of the nature of law and appreciate the role of law in society. Learners will understand the importance of legal institutions and their relationship to other institutions in society. You will also understand the various branches of law in order to give a fuller picture of the role of law.

Please note that we do not offer the Advanced Subsidiary in Law with Edexcel, however we do have Cambridge International Advanced Subsidiary available.

The A Level Law course is split into two sections which are listed below.

A Level Modules

1.1 The nature, purpose of and liability in law

This topic will cover the key distinctions between rules and laws highlighting the penalty for breaking either.  You will gain an understanding of different views such as natural law, legal positivism and law & justice.  You will also understand the term liability and how someone has a legal responsibility.


  • The distinction between rules and law – definitions, differences, examples
  • The role, function and benefits of law in society
  • Legal theories of law and justice – understanding the theorists relating to each theory together with examples and application
  • The relationship between law and morality and relevant theorists

1.2 The sources of English law, its enforcement and administration

English Law is how we govern behaviour, resolve disputes and maintain order.  This topic will tell us where law comes from, how it is applied and enforced and who is involved in the legal system.

  • Legislation
  • Delegated legislation
  • Judicial law making
  • EU law and its institutions
  • Methods of civil dispute resolution and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) – definition, advantages and disadvantages
  • Role, selection and appointment of people in law – advantages and disadvantages
  • The costs of going to law

2.1 The market

People who buy goods and services must rely on law in order to run fairly.  Contract law enforces agreements and negligence provides protection when harm occurs without a contract.

  • The law of contract
  • Liability in negligence as an alternative to contract

2.2 The criminal offender

If someone breaks the law in a way that harms society, they are a criminal offender.  Criminal Law determines when someone is legally responsible for breaking the law along with deciding the punishment they should receive.

2.3 The individual

The individual in Law refers to a person in society and their legal rights and responsibilities.  The Law not only protects individuals from harm but it also protects them from unfair treatment or abuse of power.  Individuals have rights such as freedom of speech and privacy.

What can I do with an A Level in Law?

This qualification will enable successful progression to further education courses in Law or related subjects. Through Edexcel’s world-class qualification development process they have consulted with a number of universities in the UK, as well as internationally, to validate the appropriateness of this qualification, including content, skills and assessment structure.

Previous Knowledge Required

There are no previous entry requirements for this course, however students are expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy. 

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 24 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at an Edexcel approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.

A Level Exams
There are two exams for the full A Level qualification. The length of each exam is as follows:

Paper 1 – 3 hours
Paper 2 – 3 hours

Paper 1 Paper 1 A Level Qualification

Please note that with Edexcel A Level Law, both exams MUST be taken within the SAME exam series.

Learners who enjoy the International A Level Law course are generally good at debating and understanding how rules affect real life.  You will gain practise through assignments and mock exams which will help build your confidence for the real exams.

You will not be required to purchase any books with this course.  We automatically include logins to our online e-Library.  Please note that Edexcel haven’t published a book for Law, however we can recommend other books within our eBook Library to refer to for each topic.

A Level Business Studies – Business will compliment Law well if you are planning on moving into commercial law or corporate careers.

The Pearson Edexcel Law course can be taken worldwide except for the UK.  Content within the specification is adapted for international learners and the qualification is comparable to UK A Level standards.

There may be a few centres within the UK allowing you to take this specification but it is best to check with us beforehand. 

AS and A levels are standalone qualifications, however the Full A Level carries more UCAS points than the AS Level.  It also requires more study hours as follows:

  • AS Level = 180 hours
  • A Level = 360 hours

Please note that for Edexcel International A Level Law, there is only the Full A Level option available. If you wish to study AS Law and are based outside the UK, please refer to Cambridge International A Level Law course.

You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete it much sooner if you want to.  Exams for this subject fall in June each year and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for.  We have more information on exam timetables here.
