The International A Level English Language Online course with Learn Now follows the Pearson Edexcel (YEN01) specification and is equivalent to the qualification you would achieve if attending mainstream college. Once completed, you will obtain UCAS points which will support progression to university in degrees such as English Language, Literature, Creative Writing and Linguistics.

This course would suit adult learners returning to education, students resitting exams or studying alongside other commitments, and learners looking to be accepted into University.

Please note: that the Pearson Edexcel specification is 100% exam based.  You will not be required to find a centre who will submit a non-examined assessment (NEA) as the course will be assessed solely through written examination at your chosen exam centre.

Syllabus

International A Level English Language Course Offers clear skills progression from IGCSE, these courses allow students to build on the skills already gained and prepare for their next steps.

It will use a variety of assessment styles including critical reading, data analysis, evaluation, the ability to develop and sustain arguments and a number of different writing skills which are invaluable for both further study and future employment.

The aims and objectives of these qualifications are to enable students to: 

  • Develop and apply their understanding of the concepts and methods appropriate for the analysis and study of language 
  • Explore data and examples of language in use 
  • Engage creatively and critically with a varied programme for the study of English 
  • Develop their skills as producers and interpreters of language 
  • Independently investigate language in use. 

IAS Modules

Unit 1:

This unit introduces students to how language is used across a range of different sources. Students will explore how the contexts of production and reception affect language choices in spoken and written language.

Students will explore how writers and speakers present themselves to their audiences, constructing identities through their language choices. They will also demonstrate their understanding by creating a new text.

By concentrating on what language does and how it varies to perform different functions, teaching can build on students’ prior knowledge from GCSE and International GCSE English Language and on their experience as language users.

Candidates answer two compulsory questions: one question from Section A and one question from Section B.

Unit 2:

This unit introduces students to the ways in which the English language can vary and change, with a focus on English in a global context and the role of English as an international language.

They will learn to explore and critically evaluate how language varies over time in relation to the mechanisms of language change, rather than the historical development of English.

Students answer two compulsory questions: one question from Section A and one question from Section B based on unseen transcripts. The unseen transcripts are presented in a Source Booklet for students.

IA2 Modules

Unit 3:

In this unit students will demonstrate their skills as writers, crafting texts for different genre, audience, purpose and context. They will also reflect on their work in an accompanying commentary, making connections with their study of a range of specified writing genres and styles.

Students answer two compulsory questions: one question from Section A and one question from Section B.

Unit 4: 

In this unit, students will have the opportunity to develop their research skills. They will consolidate their knowledge of language frameworks and key language concepts gained from Units 1, 2 and 3.

Students will apply these skills to one topic area from a choice of:

• Global English

• Child Language Development

• Language and Power

• Language and Technology.

A subtopic for each of the specified topics will be pre-released to provide a focus for students’ research and prepare them for examination.

Pre-released materials will be provided in order for students to focus their research. For each topic a subtopic pre-released on the website (in May for the January examination series and in January for the June examination series). 

Students answer two compulsory questions on one overall subtopic: one question from Section A and one question from Section B.

Previous Knowledge Required

There are no previous entry requirements for this course, however students are expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy. 

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 24 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at a Edexcel approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.

A Level Exams
There are four exams for the full A Level qualification. The length of each exam is as follows:

  • Paper 1 – 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Paper 2 – 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Paper 3 – 2 hours
  • Paper 4 – 2 hours

AS Level Exams
There are two exams for the AS Level qualification. The length of each exam is as follows:

  • Paper 1 – 2 hours
  • Paper 2 – 2 hours

Paper 1 Paper 1 IAS Exams

For Edexcel International AS & A Level English Language, learners can:

take Papers 1 and 2 only (for the Edexcel AS Level qualification) or

follow a staged assessment route by taking Papers 1 and 2 (for the Edexcel International AS Level qualification) in one series, then Papers 3 and 4 (for the Edexcel International A Level qualification) in a later series or

take Papers 1, 2, 3 and 4 in the same examination series, leading to the full Edexcel International A Level.

The course will require you to analyse how language is used in certain texts (formal, informal or persuasive).  You will need to write essays with clear structure and argument.  You will also need to evaluate how language affects meaning, power and communication.  If you enjoy reading and thinking about how people communicate, these skills should come easy.

If you are able to handle the essay-writing and enjoy reading, this subject should be no problem.

A Level English LiteratureStudying both Language and Literature will help with critical reading and essay-writing skills.  It will deepen your knowledge in literary techniques and support language study.  Pathways include a degree in English Literature, Creative Writing and Journalism.

A Level Psychology – Psychology will help you understand how individuals acquire and process language.  It will also support your understanding of sociolinguistics and language development.

The Pearson Edexcel English Language course can be taken worldwide except for the UK.  Content within the specification is adapted for international learners and the qualification is comparable to UK A Level standards.

There may be a few centres within the UK allowing you to take this specification but it is best to check with us beforehand. 

AS and A levels are standalone qualifications, however the Full A Level carries more UCAS points than the AS Level.  It also requires more study hours as follows:

  • AS Level = 180 hours
  • A Level = 360 hours

You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete it much sooner if you want to.  Exams for this subject fall in January and June each year and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for.  We have more information on exam timetables here.
