A Level Politics Online Course

The A Level Politics Online course with Learn Now follows the AQA (7152) specification and is equivalent to the qualification you would achieve if attending mainstream college. Once completed, you will obtain UCAS points which will support progression to university in degrees such as Politics, International Relations and European Studies.

This course would suit adult learners returning to education, students resitting exams or studying alongside other commitments, and learners looking to be accepted into University.

Syllabus

This A’ Level Politics Course gives you the knowledge to understand how government works, particularly in the UK, but also in other countries. Politics will help you develop your research and analysis skills. It will provide you with a deeper understanding of governments and give you more information on careers in politics.

The course is also ideal for anyone wishing to study at a higher level at University and gain UCAS points, plus it opens the door to a fantastic range of interesting careers.

This course is designed to build naturally on GCSE understanding with minimal duplication of content. For this subject we do not offer the AS Level as a standalone qualification. If you decide to enrol onto this course, you would need to complete the Full A Level.

A Level Modules

Within the UK, there is a constitutional monarchy combined with a parliamentary democracy.  What this means is that whilst there is a monarch (King or Queen), the real political power is exercised by elected representatives.  This includes the Prime Minister, The Cabinet, Government Departments and Civil Service. Politics within the UK consists of Political Parties (Conservative Party, Labour Party), Elections & Voting and Parliament.  Politics reflects the competition of ideas and interests, shaping policies and decisions that affect UK citizens.

Power within the United States is shared between a national government and individual state governments.  Leaders are elected according to constitution.  The government is made up of The President, Congress The Supreme Court, State Governments and Political Parties. Comparative politics studies different political systems, institutions and behaviours across countries.  It helps indicate why some countries are stable democracies while others face authoritarian rule, conflict or instability. Through comparative politics, policymakers can analyse different political systems and learn lessons for improving governance.

Core ideologies shape political thought, influence government policies and guide social and economic organisation.  Key examples include Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Communism and Fascism.  Other ideologies include less dominant or emerging belief systems that influence specific policies or social movements. Political ideas are a foundation of politics helping societies define what they value.

What can I do with an A Level in Politics?

Students in the past have progressed onto Politics at University. From there you might become a researcher, join local or national government or even start on the path to become a member of Parliament.

There are also other job options such as journalism, the media, teacher or work in the legal profession.

Previous Knowledge Required

There are no previous entry requirements for this course, however students are expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy. 

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 24 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Assessments

Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at an AQA approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.

Some learners may struggle with A Level Politics due to the essay-based answers and evaluation required for some questions.  However, if you enjoy debating current affairs or news and would prefer a subject with little mathematical or technical knowledge, then this subject may work for you.

A Level History – Combining History with Politics will help you understand how political systems developed due to wars. Revolutions and reforms.  Both subjects require good essay structure and argument skills and pathways can lead to Law, Politics, Journalism or the Civil Service.

A Level Economics – Combining politics with Economics will help you to understand government decisions with regards to money, taxes and markets.  Pathways include Economics, Politics, PPE or Business.

The AQA Politics course can only be taken within the UK and some British Overseas Territories.

AS and A levels are standalone qualifications, however the Full A Level carries more UCAS points than the AS Level.  It also requires more study hours as follows:

  • AS Level = 180 hours
  • A Level = 360 hours

You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete it much sooner if you want to.  Exams for this subject fall in May/June each year and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for.  We have more information on exam timetables here.
