FAQs

Functional Skills English Level 2 courses are intended to support students as they seek to improve their literacy skills.

Achieving this Qualification should increase your confidence and motivation, and the skills you gain will be valuable in the workplace or in any further learning.

You can also use Functional English to do things in real life. For example, you can:-

  • Write a letter using the correct punctuation and spelling.
  • Apply for jobs using an application form and summarising a bit about yourself using interesting sentences
  • Ask questions, being clear and persuading people
  • Know where to use capital letters, adjectives and conjunctions

Functional skills English Level 2 is an online course. Therefore you will be given logins to our online portal. In order to be successful in the functional skills exams, we carry out the following with learners:-

Initial Screening
We will ask you to complete an enrolment form online. This will help us to ensure that you are about to begin the right course. It is very rare that we would turn a learner away, however in the past we have set a plan to provide additional help if this is needed.

Initial Assessment
Once we have completed the enrolment process, your logins will be emailed to you. You will login and begin by taking an initial assessment. The initial assessment will confirm the level that the learner is working at. This will most likely be lower than a level 2 and this is the reason why you are taking the course in the first place!

Diagnostic Assessment
Once we have established what level you are currently working at, you will then go on to take a diagnostic assessment. This will identify the skill areas you need to work on to progress up to the next level.

Skills Plan
After completing the diagnostic assessment, you will need to work through your skills plan. Your skills plan will provide you with resources to complete each topic and sign it off. Your tutor will be monitoring your progress whilst you are working through the work. There will also be mini assessments you will need to complete to ensure that you are competent in each area.

Distance Travelled Assessment
Once you have completed your skills plan, your tutor will issue you with this assessment. This will determine how much you have improved since your initial assessment. Usually by this stage, learners are nearly ready to book their exams. The tutor will provide you with practise examinations papers to ensure that you are aware of how it will all work on the day of the examination.

Usually the exam will have questions set in real life. You will read a passage and answer questions on that particular text; you will also demonstrate your ability to write for different audiences and purposes in situations that you would expect to find at home, in education and work environments. The speaking, listening and communicating part of your exam will allow you to engage in subjects that will draw on your own specific learning.

With our Functional Skills courses, we provide full tutor support meaning: -

  • You will have access to our online portal 24/7, where you can access all the learning resources and progression tracking you need.
  • You can message your tutor as many times as you need to with any queries you may have regarding your Functional Skills Course.
  • Your tutor will monitor your progress throughout the course and provide you with useful advice.
  • Your tutor will mark any assignments set and provide you with practise examinations papers in the lead up to your examinations.

Resources will cover the whole of the Functional Skills syllabus. Therefore you will not be required to purchase any books.
