Syllabus

Thisย A Level Economics Courseย will help you explore the relationship between an individualโ€™s decisions and local economics. Also, it will show how economic policy makers can affect change on the national or global stage and develop an appreciation of fundamental principles of economics. You will also sharpen your analytical thinking and problem solving skills.

The Full A Level has 14 topics split into two sections.ย  The AS Level has 8 topics split into two sections.ย  All of these are listed below.

Full A Level Modules

An individual will make choices about education, work and spending money which will be based on economic principles. A business will make decisions when producing goods and setting price structures in competitive markets. This again will be based on economic decisions. Something that influences everyday decision-making is scarcity and the economic problem. A government becomes accountable when a market fails to deliver efficient or fair outcomes. Governments must intervene on issues such as unemployment, inequality and access to goods or services. In this topic, you will cover:

  • The economic problem and economic methodology
  • Individual economic decision making
  • Price determination in a competitive market
  • Production, costs and revenue
  • Perfect competition, imperfectly competitive markets and monopoly
  • The labour market
  • The distribution of income and wealth: poverty and inequality
  • The market mechanism, market failure and government intervention in markets
Both the national and international economy have an impact on events such as job security, income and living standards. Macroeconomic factors will be considered and how performance can affect inflation, unemployment and growth. You will also look into government decisions on fiscal policy, supply-side policies, interest rates, borrowing and investment. Here is what you will cover in this topic:

Previous Knowledge Required

There are no previous entry requirements for this course, however students are expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy.ย 

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 24 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Assessments

Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at an AQA approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.

A Level Exams
There are three exams for the full A Level qualification. The length of each exam is two hours long.

Paper 1 Paper 1 Paper 1 A Level Qualification

AS Level Exams
There are two exams for the AS Level qualification. The length of each exam is 1 hour 30 minutes long.

Paper 1 Paper 1 AS Level Exams

This A’ Level Economics course forms part of the linear qualifications. This means that learners will sit exams for their particular qualification at the end of the completed course in the June series.

You will not be able to carry forward your AS qualification to the A’ Level qualification as they are now classed as entirely independent qualifications and you will sit either AS or A’ Level exams.

The A Level Economics course can be challenging for some students but it is certainly doable.ย  If learners have a background in economics and maths, this course should be fine. If you have no previous knowledge in the subject, you may at first struggle with some concepts, however rest assured, the A Level course will cover everything.ย

This all depends on what you wish to pursue after your A Level but subjects that work nicely alongside Economics include:

  • A Level Mathematics โ€“ Helps with graphs, data and logical thinking.ย  Also if you are moving onto an Economics degree at University, mathematics will help with the finance side of this.
  • A Level Business โ€“ There is certainly a crossover with Business and Economics in respect of companies, markets, costs and competition.ย  This can help boost confidence when you are covering familiar ground.
  • A Level Politics โ€“ If you like current affairs and enjoy learning about government intervention, inequality and policy decisions, this is a great A Level to study alongside Economics.

The AQA A Level Economics course can only be taken within the UK and some British Overseas Territories.ย  If you are located outside the UK, please take a look at our Cambridge or Edexcel A Level Economics courses.

AS and A levels are standalone qualifications, however the Full A Level carries more UCAS points than the AS Level.ย  It also requires more study hours as follows:

  • AS Level = 180 hours
  • A Level = 360 hours

You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete it much sooner if you want to.ย  Exams for this subject fall in May/June each year and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for.ย  We have more information on exam timetables here.
