A Level Religious Studies Course AQA

The A Level Religious Studies Online course with Learn Now follows the AQA (7062) specification and is equivalent to the qualification you would achieve if attending mainstream college. Once completed, you will obtain UCAS points which will support progression to university in degrees such as Theology, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Law.

Syllabus

Thisย A Level Religious Studies Courseย will give you a thorough understanding of diverse philosophical and ethical viewpoints.

You will gain critical and evaluate skills sought by higher education and employers โ€“ particularly in law, education, social work, politics, medicine, administration and the media.

The Full A Level has four topics you will need to cover and these are listed below.

A Level Modules

This topic will use reason, logic and critical thinking to help study some philosophical questions surrounding religion, god, belief and spiritual concepts.ย  You will examine arguments, evaluate evidence and consider different viewpoints from both religious and non-religious perspectives.

  • Evil and suffering
  • Religious experience
  • Religious language
  • Miracles
  • Self and life after death

Ethics is the study of moral principles that guide human behaviour.ย  For this section you will study ethics alongside religion to explore how religious beliefs influence moral decision-making.ย  You will be expected to analyse ethical theories, philosophical arguments and religious perspectives.ย  This will help you to understand how people make moral choices.

  • Ethical theories
  • Issues of human life and death
  • Issues of animal life and death
  • Introduction to meta ethics
  • Free will and moral responsibility
  • Conscience
  • Bentham and Kant

This topic will examine Christian beliefs, teachings and how Christianity interacts with society and philosophical issues.

For Christianity the following topics are covered:

  • Sources of wisdom and authority
  • God/gods/ultimate reality
  • Self, death and the afterlife
  • Good conduct and key moral principles
  • Expression of religious identity
  • Religion, gender and sexuality
  • Religion and science
  • Religion and secularisation
  • Religion and religious pluralism.

This topic will explore how religious beliefs and philosophical thinking interact, influence and challenge each other.ย  You will be asked to evaluate how philosophical ideas affect religious beliefs and how religion responds to philosophical criticism.

  • How religion is influenced by, and has an influence on philosophy of religion in relation to the issues studied.

This section will examine how religious beliefs and ethical theories influence and challenge each other.

  • How religion is influenced by, and has an influence on ethical studies in relation to the issues studied.

Previous Knowledge Required

There are no previous entry requirements for this course, however students are expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy.ย 

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 24 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Assessments

Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at an AQA approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.

For Religious Studies there will be essay based questions where you will be expected to explain philosophical ideas clearly, compare different viewpoints and evaluate arguments in detail.ย  If you enjoy debating big questions around life and morality, are good at English and like analysing ideas, you should have no issues with Religious Studies.

You will not be required to purchase any books with this course.ย  We automatically include logins to our online e-Library which includes access to following eBook(s):

A Level Philosophy โ€“ Both Philosophy and Religious Studies will develop analysis, argument and essay writing skills.ย  Both will involve analysing arguments about god, morality and existence.ย  Degree pathways include Philosophy, Theology, Law or Ethics.

The AQA Religious Studies course can only be taken within the UK and some British Overseas Territories.ย  You will not be able to take Religious Studies internationally.

AS and A levels are standalone qualifications, however the Full A Level carries more UCAS points than the AS Level.ย  It also requires more study hours as follows:

  • AS Levelย = 180 hours
  • A Levelย = 360 hours
