Syllabus

The A Level Further Mathematics course is a separate qualification to the A Level in Mathematics. Learners are able to run both courses alongside one another if they want to.

Further mathematics is designed for students with an enthusiasm for mathematics, many of whom will go on to degrees in mathematics, engineering, the sciences and economics.

AS and A level further mathematics build from GCSE level and AS and A level mathematics. As well as building on algebra and calculus introduced in A level mathematics, the A level further mathematics core content introduces complex numbers and matrices, fundamental mathematical ideas with wide applications in mathematics, engineering, physical sciences and computing.

The International Advanced Level in Further Mathematics consists of six externally-examined units.

If you are also taking International A Level Mathematics, you must ensure that the units do not clash with International A Level Further Mathematics.

For example, students who are awarded certificates in both International Advanced Level Mathematics and International Advanced Level Further Mathematics must use unit results from 12 different units, i.e. once a unit result has been used to cash in for a qualification, it cannot be re-used to cash in for another qualification.

The options for Further Mathematics are shown below.

Still unsure? Look through our FAQs

International A Level Further Mathematics is considered one of the hardest A Level subjects as you are expected to combine ideas.  Also, questions are less predictable and topics like complex numbers, matrices and proof can feel unfamiliar in the beginning.

The online learning platform will give you plenty of opportunities to practise which will make the subject more manageable.  You will also receive access to Integral, an award winning learning platform which will help with your studies.

You will not be required to purchase any books with this course.  We automatically include logins to our online e-Library which includes access to following eBook(s):

Pearson Edexcel International A Level Mathematics Further Pure Mathematics 1 Student BookJoe Skrakowski

Pearson Edexcel International A Level Mathematics Further Pure Mathematics 1 Student BookJoe Skrakowski

Additional books will be issued once we know your subject options.

Not see the book you are looking for? Ask us and we will let you know if we have it!

As part of your Maths course, you will also have access to Integral which provides comprehensive resources to support your study and revision for AS/A level Mathematics. Integral covers the whole of the A level Mathematics curriculum.

Resources are designed to develop the deep understanding and skills you need to excel in maths. They’re structured to guide you through initial learning, practice and then reaching examination standard.

International A Level Mathematics and Physics Edexcel – Physics includes topics in mechanics and electricity which requires mathematical skills.  Pathways lead onto engineering physics and maths.

International A Level Mathematics Edexcel and Computer Science CIE – Further Mathematics will help your understanding with logic, matrices and algorithms.  You will cover programming and computational thinking which provides strong pathways into AI, Data and Software.

The Pearson Edexcel Further Mathematics course can be taken worldwide except for the UK.  Content within the specification is adapted for international learners and the qualification is comparable to UK A Level standards.

There may be a few centres within the UK allowing you to take this specification but it is best to check with us beforehand.

AS and A levels are standalone qualifications, however the Full A Level carries more UCAS points than the AS Level.  It also requires more study hours as follows:

  • AS Level = 180 hours
  • A Level = 360 hours

You will see the difference in the content above under ‘syllabus’ but you can also refer to our article on ‘what is as level’ for more information.

You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete it much sooner if you want to.  Exams for this subject fall in January and June each year for most topics but some are also assessed in October and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for.  We have more information on exam timetables here.
