Course Information

If you want to develop your knowledge of Special Educational Needs (SEN) so that you can embark on a rewarding career or maybe you are already working in a related field and want to improve your career prospects, then this is the course for you. Some children have needs or disabilities that affect their ability to learn. For example:

  • behavioural/social (eg difficulty making friends)
  • reading and writing (eg dyslexia)
  • understanding things
  • concentrating (eg Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
  • physical needs or impairments

The Distance Learning Special Educational Needs course has been designed specifically for those aspiring to work in a Special Educational Needs (SEN) support role and is particularly suited to classroom teachers, teaching assistants and those planning a career in teaching or a role that involves support.

This course will enable students to learn how special educational needs impacts upon the learning and development of children and you will discover how you can adapt learning for children who may have language, speech or communication issues.

You will learn how to make a difference to children’s learning through identifying and planning any particular special needs they may have.

What can you do with Special Educational Needs?

You could work in a mixed class, a special class in a mainstream school, a special needs school, a pupil referral unit or a further education college. You may assist with whole classes, individual pupils or small groups.

With experience, you could become a special educational needs teacher, SEN co-ordinator or head of department. At a special needs school, you could become deputy head or headteacher.

Previous Knowledge Required

You do not need any prior learning knowledge or experience to take this course. It is openly available to anyone who wishes to take part in a highly rewarding home study course, although you would be expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy.

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 12 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.
