Still unsure? See below for more information on HLTA Level 4

Roles could vary; however you would generally support children to access the education offered at school, join in with class activities, help make friends and navigate the day-to-day interactions they have with other children and staff.

You may need to liaise with parents or staff in regards to progress, learning goals, and support strategies.

Other jobs might include overseeing children’s learning and project-based work through a range of assessment and monitoring strategies against learning intentions, providing feedback to pupils.

If you feel those tasks interest you, then you are off to great start but it is also worth bearing in mind the benefits that might come with working in a school depending on the institution:

  • Reasonable working hours Monday to Friday
  • Full and part time roles normally available
  • A generous salary including pension contribution

If you are not already working within a school, you would need to first apply to become a teaching assistant.  Please see our teaching assistant level 3 course for further information.

You will then need the support of the school to help you achieve HLTA status.  Training will involve covering all 33 TDA standards which are covered within this course.

Finally, you will require a Level 2 or above in English and Maths.

A Higher Level Teaching Assistant will carry out the same role as a Teaching Assistant, however they will also take on additional jobs which is why they will also receive a higher salary.

Additional jobs will include teaching classes on their own without a teacher, covering planned absences and help cover teachers when they need to plan and mark work.
