What is Animal Care?

Animal Care is the study of housing, feeding, handling and caring for animals whilst also ensuring that their health and welfare is maintained sufficiently.  Depending on which course you decide to study, students may also cover behaviour, nutritional needs, health care, legislation and ethical issues that should be considered whilst looking after animals.

Studying Animal Care can help you develop the necessary knowledge which is relevant to a range of animal-related settings. Depending on your qualifications, experience and any additional training required, areas of work could possibly include the following:

Pet Sitter and Pet Walker

If you are a pet sitter, you may be employed or have your own business. Your duties could involve:

• Ensuring the pet is not hungry or thirsty
• Providing any medication required if the owners are not able to
• Carrying out different types of grooming
• Walking or playing with the pet to ensure they have had sufficient exercise

Whilst these tasks seem simple, there are certain things you should understand before being responsible for the pet’s needs, such as:

• Animal First Aid
• Animal Behaviour
• Animal Care
• Basic Pet Grooming

Veterinary Support Assistant

Training to become a veterinary support assistant can lead to all kinds of job roles, and most people who take this course apply to work within a local veterinary practice.

This course will provide you with the basics you need to know when working within a veterinary practice, including anatomy of dogs and cats, health and safety, infection control and veterinary pharmacy.  You could then undertake further studies in order to become a Veterinary Nurse.
