Cambridge IGCSE Geography
The Cambridge specification will give you the opportunity to travel the world via our online learning portal, learning about both natural and social sciences along the way.
You will understand how geography impacts everyday life and discover the key opportunities and challenges facing the world. You will also develop academic and life skills from writing, teamwork and communication to analytical skills.
The course has three modules you will need to cover.

Edexcel IGCSE Geography
The Edexcel specification will help you develop your knowledge and understanding of geographical concepts and appreciate the relevance of these concepts to our changing world. You will be able to appreciate that people have different views of, and attitudes to, the world, its environments and its issues.
The course will allow you to acquire, develop and apply practical geographical enquiry skills. You will also be able to undertake geographical investigations that include both primary and secondary data collection, presentation and analysis, drawing conclusions, and evaluating the whole geographical investigation.
There are two modules you will need to cover.

Paper 2: Human Geography
- Economic activity and energy

- Fieldwork from one of these topics – Global issues (Fragile environments and climate change, Globalisation and migration, Development and human welfare)

Will I find this course hard?
Some learners may find the subject challenging initially due to the large range of topics included for physical and human geography. On top of this, learners will be expected to interpret maps, graphs and data. It makes a big difference if learners enjoy learning about different countries and cultures along with environmental issues.
The course will help teach learners to apply their geographical knowledge to real-life situations supporting answers with evidence. Learners will practise through in-depth assignments and practise exam papers.
Will I need to buy any books?

Which subjects should I study alongside this course?
History – This humanities subject compliments geography as it will help develop skills in essay writing, analysing sources, critical thinking and understanding global events.
Biology – Studying topics such as ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation and climate change supports topics in Geography.
Maths – The course will often require you to analyse graphs, calculate percentages and interpret statistical data. Maths will help support these skills along with meeting entry requirements if applying to colleges or universities.
Where can the subject take me?
The course will open doors to a variety of subjects. You may want to progress onto A Levels in subjects such as Geography, Environmental Science, Biology and Economics.
After A Levels, degree options include Geography, Environmental Science, Geology, Urban Planning and Environmental Management.
If you don’t want to progress onto A Levels, you might want to consider a level 3 apprenticeship which would allow you to earn whilst you learn. Students in the past have progressed onto roles such as Apprentice Geospatial Survey Technician Level 3.
Overall the subject will develop valuable skills in Research, Critical Thinking, Data Interpretation and Problem-Solving.
Can I study this course from outside the UK?
Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge (CIE) qualifications can be taken inside and outside the UK. Content within the specification is adapted for international learners and the qualification is comparable to UK GCSE standards.
How long does the course take?
You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete the course much sooner if you need to. Exams for this subject fall in May/June or October/Novembereach year and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for. We have more information on exam timetables here.
How does this course compare to a college GCSE?

What can I do with IGCSE Geography
The course could lead on to further study in geography at A Level or more vocationally-related courses.
IGCSEs are accepted by leading Universities and employers around the works as evidence of academic achievement. Many Universities require a combination of AS & A’ Levels and IGCSEs or equivalent to meet their entry requirements.
