Cambridge IGCSE English Language
Specification Code: 0500 (A*-G) or 0990 (9-1)
The Cambridge specification is designed for learners whose first language is English. Students will develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively in both speech and writing.
You will learn how to employ a wide-ranging vocabulary, use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.
The course has two modules you will need to cover.

In developing reading skills, students will engage with a range of genres and text types from the twentieth and/or twenty-first centuries, including literature, fiction and non-fiction, and other forms of writing, such as discursive essays, reviews and articles. This study will include focus on writers’ use of language and style and the ways in which writers achieve effects and influence readers. Students will also study how influence may include fact, ideas, perspectives, opinions and bias.

As a developing writer yourself, you will be introduced to a range of writing skills, including the ability to create and compose texts with a variety of forms and purposes, e.g. descriptive, narrative, discursive, argumentative and persuasive. This study will include focus on the following text types: letter, report, article, journal, speech, interview and summary.
Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at a CIE approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.

There are two exams for the full qualification. The length of each exam is as follows:Paper 1 – 2 hours

Edexcel IGCSE English Language
Specification Code: 4EA1
The Pearson Edexcel specification will enable you to read a wide range of texts fluently and with good understanding. You will also learn to read critically and use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve your own writing.
You will learn how to write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately. Also this course will enable you to use grammar correctly, punctuate and spell accurately.
For this syllabus, there are a number of set texts. These texts regularly change and therefore if you would like to know the set texts for a particular exam series, please contact us and provide us with the year you wish to complete the course. We can provide you with a list of the set texts available.
Course Content
Paper 1: Non-fiction Texts and Transactional Writing
- The contemporary non-fiction texts from Part 1 of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology.
- Develop skills to analyse how writers use linguistic and structural devices to achieve their effects.
- Explore links and connections between writers’ ideas and perspectives.
- Develop transactional writing skills for a variety of purposes and audiences.
- Use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately.
Paper 2: Poetry and Prose Texts and Imaginative Writing
- The poetry and prose texts from Part 2 of the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Anthology.
- Develop skills to analyse how writers use linguistic and structural devices to achieve their effects.
- Develop imaginative writing skills to engage the reader.
- Use spelling, punctuation and grammar accurately.
Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at an Edexcel approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.

Will I find this course hard?
You will be required to read and understand a variety of fiction and non-ficton texts. Learners can find it challenging when they are required to analyse how writers use language and structure expecially under exam conditions.
Learners will find these skills come easier to them if they enjoy reading, writing and discussing ideas. The course will also prepare you for examinations as there will be practise learning new vocabulary and analysing characters and themes.
Will I need to buy any books?

Which subjects should I study alongside this course?
English Literaturewill help develop skills such as text analysis, vocabularly, essay writing and understanding of themes and characters. The subject provides a natural combination with English Language. For example, if you are analysing a poem, Literature will build on your language analysis skills which are required in English Language.
History will require you to read source material, evaluate evidence and write structured essays. These skills will help you with English Literature.
Where can the subject take me?
Economics will open doors to a variety of subjects. You may want to progress onto A Levels in subjects such as Language, Literature, History, Politics or Media Studies.
After A Levels, degree options include English, Law, Journalism, Media, Education, Politics or History.
If you don’t want to progress onto A Levels, you might want to consider a level 3 apprenticeship which would allow you to earn whilst you learn.
Overall the subject will develop valuable skills in critical thinking, data interpretation, decision-making and financial awareness.
Can I study this course from outside the UK?
Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge (CIE) qualifications can be taken inside and outside the UK. Content within the specification is adapted for international learners and the qualification is comparable to UK GCSE standards.
How long does the course take?
You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete the course much sooner if you need to. Exams for this subject fall in May/June or October/Novembereach year and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for. We have more information on exam timetables here.
How does this course compare to a college GCSE?

What can I do with IGCSE English Language
English GCSEs are used as a minimum requirement for many further education, higher education and job role specifications.
It provides one of the strongest foundations for success in these scenarios. Ultimately because English is the language of business and one of the most spoken worldwide.
