Cambridge IGCSE Economics

Will I find this course hard?
This subject will give you an insight into how government and businesses make economic decisions and spend money. Learners may find certain aspects of the course challenging such as understanding economic theories and analysing graphs and data, however you are not required to be an expert in Maths in order to do so.
Many learners enjoy the course because they can relate the subject to current affairs and businesses. Also, you will gain an understanding of how countries and markets work. Most calculations will involve basic Maths such as percentages, averages and simple graphs.
Will I need to buy any books?

Which subjects should I study alongside this course?
Whilst Mathematics isn’t essential to take alongside the course, it will help with tasks such as interpreting graphs, calculating percentages and understanding trends. Calculating inflation rates or interpreting unemployment data will use mathematic skills.
Business will compliment Economics as it helps us to understand how a business responds to economic decisions. For example, economics will help explain why interest rates increase, whilst business will explain how businesses respond.
Where can the subject take me?
Economics will open doors to a variety of subjects. You may want to progress onto A Levels in subjects such as Accounting, Business or Economics.
After A Levels, degree options include Economics, Finance, Business Management, Accounting, Banking and International Relations.
If you don’t want to progress onto A Levels, you might want to consider a level 3 apprenticeship which would allow you to earn whilst you learn.
Overall the subject will develop valuable skills in critical thinking, data interpretation, decision-making and financial awareness.
Can I study this course from outside the UK?
Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge (CIE) qualifications can be taken inside and outside the UK. Content within the specification is adapted for international learners and the qualification is comparable to UK GCSE standards.
How long does the course take?
You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete the course much sooner if you need to. Exams for this subject fall in May/June or October/Novembereach year and therefore you are able to choose which exam sitting you want to apply for. We have more information on exam timetables here.
How does this course compare to a college GCSE?

What can I do with IGCSE Economics
Economics gives learners a solid foundation for further study. Students who achieve grades 9 to 4 are well prepared to follow a wide range of courses including Cambridge International AS & A Level Economics, or the equivalent.
