Cambridge A Level Further Mathematics
This Cambridge specification develops and extends a set of transferable skills. These include the skill of working with mathematical information, as well as the ability to think logically and independently, consider accuracy, model situations mathematically, analyse results and reflect on findings.
Students can apply these skills across a wide range of subjects and these skills equip them well for progression to higher education or directly into employment. Some universities prefer applicants for degrees in mathematics and mathematical/scientific subjects to hold a level 3 Further Mathematics qualification.
This syllabus is intended for high ability learners who have achieved, or are likely to achieve, a high grade in the A Level Mathematics examination. Knowledge of the whole content of the Cambridge International A Level Mathematics syllabus is assumed. Learners will find that the additional time spent studying Further Mathematics will support their understanding of A Level Mathematics.

A Level Further Mathematics Edexcel
The Further Mathematics YFM01 specification is a separate qualification to the Mathematics YMA01 specification. Learners are able to run both courses alongside one another if they want to.
Further mathematics is designed for students with an enthusiasm for mathematics, many of whom will go on to degrees in mathematics, engineering, the sciences and economics.
AS and A level further mathematics build from GCSE level and AS and A level mathematics. As well as building on algebra and calculus introduced in A level mathematics, the A level further mathematics core content introduces complex numbers and matrices, fundamental mathematical ideas with wide applications in mathematics, engineering, physical sciences and computing.
The course consists of six externally-examined units. If you are also taking International A Level Mathematics, you must ensure that the units do not clash with International A Level Further Mathematics.
For example, students who are awarded certificates in both International Advanced Level Mathematics and International Advanced Level Further Mathematics must use unit results from 12 different units, i.e. once a unit result has been used to cash in for a qualification, it cannot be re-used to cash in for another qualification.

FAQs
Will I find this course hard?
Further Mathematics is considered one of the hardest A Level subjects as you are expected to combine ideas. Also, questions are less predictable and topics like complex numbers, matrices and proof can feel unfamiliar in the beginning.
The course will delve deeper into algebra such as complex numbers, matrices, proof and vectors. It is recommended that you have either completed Mathematics or are completing it alongside Further Mathematics.
The online learning platform will give you plenty of opportunities to practise which will make the subject more manageable. You will also receive access to Integral, an award winning learning platform which will help with your studies.
Will I need to buy any books?
You will not be required to purchase any books with this course. We automatically include logins to our online e-Library which includes access to eBooks such as:
Cambridge (CIE)
- Cambridge IAL Further Pure Mathematics 1 – Sophie Goldie (Hodder Education)
- Cambridge IAL Further Pure Mathematics 2 – Sophie Goldie (Hodder Education)
- Cambridge IAL Further Pure Mathematics Mechanics – Sophie Goldie (Hodder Education)
- Cambridge IAL Further Pure Mathematics Probability and Statistics – Sophie Goldie (Hodder Education)
Pearson Edexcel
- Pearson Edexcel IAL Mathematics Further Pure Mathematics 1 Student Book – Joe Skrakowski

AS and A levels are standalone qualifications, however the Full A Level carries more UCAS points than the AS Level. It also requires more study hours as follows:
- AS Level = 180 hours
- A Level = 360 hours
You will see the difference in the content above under ‘syllabus’ but you can also refer to our article on What is AS Level? for more information.
How long does the course take?
You will receive access and support for two years, however you can complete it much sooner if you want to. Exams for this subject fall as follows:
- Cambridge (CIE) – May/June or October/November
