Course Description

The Distance Learning Canine Science Level 3 course is a fully comprehensive course and it will give you an understanding of the psychology of canine learning and behaviour, anatomy and physiology and how to provide the correct nutrition for dogs of a variety of breeds and ages. You will also learn about the varied roles of dogs in society.

The course also covers the history and evolution of the canine, exploring the differences between dogs and their wolf ancestors.

What can you do with Canine Science Level 3

On completion of this course you may want to look into jobs within kennels, the zoo, animal rescue centres and sanctuaries. You could also work in animal hospitals, Blue Cross adoption centres or as an animal collection officer for the RSPCA.

You could also progress with education into fields such as animal massage or hydrotherapy, working with animals recovering from injury or undergoing treatment for mobility problems.

The diversity of Canis familiaris
Common genetic disorders in the dog
Why humans have required certain characteristics in dogs
The major similarities between dogs and wolves
The anatomical differences between dogs and wolves
The importance, advantages and disadvantages of selective breeding
Commonly seen dog behaviours and compare with the wolf
The importance of canine communication
How understanding dog behaviour enhances the training process
The history of dog training
The roles of the canine in society since known domestication
The changing role of the dog in society
The importance of dogs as pets
The importance of working dogs
The purpose of good nutrition
The digestive tract and impact of poor nutrition
The need for breed-specific nutrition and breed-size-specific nutrition
The importance of correct life-stage nutrition
The function and role of the special senses
The adaptation of the special senses
The differences between sight and scent hounds
Anatomical and possible behavioural problems
associated with the special senses

Previous Knowledge Required

You do not need any prior learning knowledge or experience to take this home study course. This course is openly available to anyone who wishes to take part in a highly rewarding home study course, although you would be expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy.

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 12 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Support

You will have dedicated Tutor Support for 12 months. All assignments are marked by one of our professional Tutors who will offer regular feedback and guide you through your course. You must have access to email in order to contact your Tutor.

You will be provided with the telephone number for your dedicated Student Support Team who will be available for any other queries that you may have whilst completing your course. You can be assured that you will receive unlimited support for your home study course, so there is no need to struggle or feel isolated during your studies.

Assessment

You must successfully complete a series of assignments. Once all assignments and activities have been completed satisfactorily, you will then be awarded your certificate.  The good news is, there is no final exam.

Course Outcome

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ABC Awards and Certa Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the components the learner has completed as part of the course).

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards and Certa Awards Quality Licence Scheme. This means that OSC LTD has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet defined quality criteria. The completion of this course alone does not lead to a regulated qualification* but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills gained. The Learner Unit Summary may be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this subject. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.
