Course Information

If you want to develop your knowledge of Animal Welfare so that you can embark on a rewarding career or maybe you are already working in a related field and want to improve your career prospects, then this is the course for you.

Animal welfare means how an animal is coping with the conditions in which it lives. An animal is in a good state of welfare if (as indicated by scientific evidence) it is healthy, comfortable, well nourished, safe, able to express innate behaviour, and if it is not suffering from unpleasant states such as pain, fear, and distress.

The Distance Learning Animal Welfare course will help develop your understanding of Animal Welfare within a wide range of contexts. You will gain an understanding of ethics involved in the care, farming and conservation of animals.

This course covers legal, ethical, commercial, agricultural and conservational aspects of animal welfare, from marine life and elephants, to the ethical farming in the UK. Maximum coverage of welfare topics is provided with this course, looking at different animals and their habitats.

What can you do with Animal Welfare Level 4

You’ll be able to look after animals in places like kennels, the zoo, animal rescue centres and sanctuaries. You could also work in animal hospitals, Blue Cross adoption centres or as an animal collection officer for the RSPCA.

Your day-to-day duties may include:

  • preparing food and feeding, cleaning and grooming the animals
  • exercising dogs in a yard or taking them for walks
  • cleaning out kennels, pens and cages, and changing bedding
  • looking after animals who become ill or distressed
  • answering queries from colleagues and visitors ensuring that animal enclosures are maintained
  • Depending on your role, you may also have to keep records, take bookings and advise owners on how to look after their animals.

You may specialise in animal massage or hydrotherapy, working with animals recovering from injury or undergoing treatment for mobility problems.
