Course Description

If you want to develop your knowledge of animal care so that you can embark on a new career or you are already working in a related field and want to improve your career prospects, then this is the course for you.

The animal care sector offers a fascinating range of career opportunities, whether you are looking to work for an animal welfare charity or your local pet shop.

The Distance Learning Animal Care Level 2 course is a fully comprehensive course and will give you a full understanding of animal care, covering the practical, scientific, legal and ethical aspects involved with caring for animals.

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the main needs of an animal
  • Devise suitable feeding plans
  • Learn how to set up suitable accommodation
  • Handle animals in the correct way
  • Administer basic first aid procedures
  • Identify signs of ill health
  • Recognise normal and abnormal behaviours
  • Discuss the ethical, social and legal debates regarding animals and their care.

What can you do with Animal Care Level 2

You’ll be able to look after animals in places like kennels, animal rescue centres and sanctuaries. You could also work in animal hospitals, Blue Cross adoption centres or as an animal collection officer for the RSPCA.

Your day-to-day duties may include:

  • preparing food and feeding, cleaning and grooming the animals
  • exercising dogs in a yard or taking them for walks
  • cleaning out kennels, pens and cages, and changing bedding
  • looking after animals who become ill or distressed
  • answering queries from colleagues and visitors ensuring that animal enclosures are maintained
  • Depending on your role, you may also have to keep records, take bookings and advise owners on how to look after their animals.
You may specialise in animal massage or hydrotherapy, working with animals recovering from injury or undergoing treatment for mobility problems.

Previous Knowledge Required

You do not need any prior learning knowledge or experience to take this home study course. This course is openly available to anyone who wishes to take part in a highly rewarding home study course, although you would be expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy.

You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 12 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.


You will have dedicated Tutor Support for 12 months. All assignments are marked by one of our professional Tutors who will offer regular feedback and guide you through your course. You must have access to email in order to contact your Tutor.

You will be provided with the telephone number for your dedicated Student Support Team who will be available for any other queries that you may have whilst completing your course. You can be assured that you will receive unlimited support for your home study course, so there is no need to struggle or feel isolated during your studies.


You must successfully complete a series of assignments. Once all assignments and activities have been completed satisfactorily, you will then be awarded your certificate.  The good news is, there is no final exam. The course will be delivered and assessed by NCC.

Awarding Organisation

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement by Training Qualifications UK (TQUK).
