Course Description

This bundle course of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Child Care Diploma is designed to introduce the learner to a variety of areas concerned with the controversial subject of FASD and Child Care. This Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders course has been created in conjunction with experts - FASawareUK.

Many clinicians, teachers and most families, have limited clinical expertise in this extremely un-publicised syndrome. The course will therefore be beneficial to professionals and families alike and will help them to gain an increased understanding of the issues and the possible responses and interventions.

The course covers the clinical issues involved with alcohol use during pregnancy, together with the clinical symptoms and developmental outcomes. It then looks at the neuropathology of Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), including psychopathy and cognitive functioning. Finally, it will examine interventions, including prevention and rehabilitation approaches.

The course aims to:

  • Provide a nationally accredited certificated programme covering a wide range of issues associated with alcohol use during pregnancy and the variety of clinical symptoms and developmental outcomes and possible interventions
  • Provide a flexible learning opportunity that is accessible to a wide range of learners
  • Provide the student with knowledge and understanding that can be applied by those who either personally, voluntary or professionally have a special interest in this field.

Specific objectives of the programme are listed as Learning Outcomes at the start of each of the six Modules of the Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders programme. These Learning Outcomes cover areas that relate to:

- The history of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
- Taking Responsibility for the Unborn Child and diagnosing FASD
- Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and screening
- Children with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD)
- Behavioural Phenotypes of FASD
- Growing up with FASD

The Child Care Diploma course leads to a >nationally-recognised Level 3 award accredited by NCFE. It has been designed to enable you to strengthen and increase your knowledge and understanding of home-based childcare practice.

Course topics covered within the Child Care Diploma course include: Th
e introduction to childcare practice, childcare and child development (0-16), the childcare practitioner and planning to meet children's individual needs.

The Child Care Diploma course will help you to improve your knowledge and skills, meet the requirements for basic training as part of childminder registration or application to be a registered childminder and undertake professional development.
Our bundle offer of both the Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders course and the Child Care Diploma course will provide an all-round knowledge of these subjects that complement each other very well.

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme.  This means that NCC Home Learning has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet certain quality criteria.  The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future.  The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector.  To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 3 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.

The course itself has been designed by NCC Home Learning to meet specific learners’ or employers’ requirements.   ABC Awards’ endorsement involves a robust and rigorous quality audit by external inspectors to ensure quality is consistently met.  A regular review of courses is carried out as part of the endorsement process.
ABC Awards is a leading national Awarding Organisation, regulated by Ofqual, and the Welsh Government.  They have a comprehensive portfolio of over 650 Ofqual regulated qualifications on the national Qualifications and Credit framework (QCF).  It has a long-established reputation for developing and awarding high quality vocational qualifications across a wide range of industries.   As a registered charity, ABC Awards combines 180 years of examination and assessment expertise but also implements a responsive, flexible and innovative approach to the needs of our customers.
