Course Description

The Distance Learning Certificate in Safeguarding Children and Young People is an ideal course for those who may work with children and young people who require specific training in this area or those who wish to improve their career prospects.

A child may be defined as a young person between the stages of infancy and youth. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) defines a child as an individual aged 0 to 18 years old, but within British Criminal law, a child is considered any person up to the age of 14, although they can be convicted of an offence from the age of 10. A young person may be defined as someone in the first or an early stage of life, growth or development or more specifically an individual between the ages of 14-19. It is important to note that a person’s development depends on a number of genetic and environmental factors and if these are affected in a negative way, so will the young person’s consequential development.

Although Safeguarding has not been given a specific definition in law, it may be considered in its simplest form as ‘keeping children safe from harm, such as illness, abuse or injury.’ Following the implementation of the Every Child Matters agenda, the term ‘Child Protection’ has been replaced by ‘Safeguarding’ and is the responsibility of all professionals who work in an environment with children and young people. All professionals i.e. professional careers, parenting workers and care assistants, now have a duty of care to the children and young people they work with and are expected to protect a child’s emotional, physical and sexual well-being as well as to ensure the child is not suffering from any form of neglect.

A child or young person may be harmed in many different ways and it is not always obvious to the outsider as to what is occurring with regards to their safety and wellbeing.

Children and young people can be harmed in a number of different ways, such as:

• People
• Environment
• Health Issues
• Accidents
• Injuries

Awarding Organisation

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement by ABC Awards and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details all of the units you have completed as part of your course).

The course has been endorsed under the ABC Awards’ Quality Licence Scheme.  This means that NCC Home Learning has undergone an external quality check to ensure that the organisation and the courses it offers, meet certain quality criteria.  The completion of this course alone does not lead to an Ofqual regulated qualification but may be used as evidence of knowledge and skills towards regulated qualifications in the future.  The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector.  To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 2 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of difficulty involved in successful completion by the learner.

The course itself has been designed by NCC Home Learning to meet specific learners’ or employers’ requirements.   ABC Awards’ endorsement involves a robust and rigorous quality audit by external inspectors to ensure quality is consistently met.  A regular review of courses is carried out as part of the endorsement process.
ABC Awards is a leading national Awarding Organisation, regulated by Ofqual, and the Welsh Government.  They have a comprehensive portfolio of over 650 Ofqual regulated qualifications on the national Qualifications and Credit framework (QCF).  It has a long-established reputation for developing and awarding high quality vocational qualifications across a wide range of industries.   As a registered charity, ABC Awards combines 180 years of examination and assessment expertise but also implements a responsive, flexible and innovative approach to the needs of our customers.

Renowned for excellent customer service, and quality standards, ABC Awards also offers over 600 Ofqual regulated qualifications for all ages and abilities post-14; all are developed with the support of relevant stakeholders to ensure that they meet the needs and standards of employers across the UK
