Course Description

This IGCSE Sociology Course will allow you to explore aspects of social relationships, processes and structures; as a result, you will develop a greater understanding of human societies and the role of continuity and change in social life. You will evaluate critically a variety of different social, economic and political structures and therefore learn more about the sociological method, and developing an ability to assess different forms of information and evidence.

There are two papers for this qualification which will cover the following content:-
How do different sociologists interpret society?
How do sociologists study society?
What types of information and data do sociologists use?
Definitions of abnormality, including deviation from social norms, failure to function adequately, statistical infrequency and deviation from ideal mental health.
The behavioural, emotional and cognitive characteristics of phobias, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
The behavioural approach to explaining and treating phobias
The cognitive approach to explaining and treating depression
The biological approach to explaining and treating OCD.
What is the relationship between the individual and society?
How do we learn to be human?
What is social stratification?
What are the main features of social inequality and how are these created?
What are the different types of family?
How are family roles changing?
What are the changes affecting the family?
What is the function of education?
What factors help to explain differences in educational achievement?
What are crime, deviance and social control?
What are the patterns of crime?
What are the explanations of crime?
Who controls the media?
What is the influence of the media?

Previous Knowledge Required

You do not need any prior learning knowledge or experience to take this course. This course is openly available to anyone who wishes to take part in a highly rewarding home study course, although you would be expected to have a reasonable standard of literacy. You have the freedom to start the course at any time and continue your studies at your own pace for a period of up to 12 months from initial registration with the full support of your Tutor.

Support

You will have dedicated Tutor Support for 12 months. All assignments are marked by one of our professional Tutors who will offer regular feedback and guide you through your course. You must have access to email in order to contact your Tutor.

You will be provided with the telephone number for your dedicated Student Support Team who will be available for any other queries that you may have whilst completing your course. You can be assured that you will receive unlimited support for your home study course, so there is no need to struggle or feel isolated during your studies.

Assessment

The course contains a number of assignments which your tutor will mark and give you valuable feedback on. You will also have access to quizzes to help you gauge your progress.

Students will be required to arrange and pay for their examinations at a CIE approved centre. We can provide an extensive list of these centres for you.
